Handfasting Ceremonies in Spokane
A Ceremony Woven Just for You
A handfasting is one of the oldest and most meaningful ways to celebrate a union. As your hands are wrapped together with cords or ribbons, you make your promises to one another in a ritual that has been shared for centuries.
I officiate handfasting ceremonies and legal weddings for couples who want a celebration that feels personal and true to who they are.
What Is a Handfasting?
Handfasting traces back to Celtic traditions in Scotland and Ireland, with roots in Norse custom as well. Today it’s part of many pagan and earth based celebrations, and many couples include it in their wedding alongside vows and rings.
During the ritual, the couple’s joined hands are wrapped with cords, often in colors chosen for their meaning, while blessings and promises are spoken. It’s often said to be where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from.
Your Ceremony, Your Way
Every ceremony I officiate is created with you. We’ll talk about your story and the feeling you want your day to have, then shape a ceremony around it. That might include choosing cord colors and their meanings, honoring the elements or your ancestors, or writing your own vows.
Questions Couples Often Ask
Can a handfasting be our legal wedding?
Yes. I’m a legal officiant in Washington and have also officiated weddings in Idaho. Bring your marriage license to the ceremony, and I’ll sign it and drop it off at the courthouse for you.
Do we need to be pagan?
Handfasting is welcomed by couples of many spiritual paths, and your ceremony can be as traditional or as modern as you like.
How long does the ritual take?
The handfasting itself can be a few minutes, or a longer part of your ceremony with vows and blessings woven in.
